How to make a box cushion cover with Deborah
Learn how to make a box cushion cover with concealed zip by special guest & soft furnishings expert Deborah Good.

As you may already know, I specialise in Traditional fitted upholstery, however there are a number of chairs which were born to have a boxed cushion rather than built up with springs.
While both approaches have their place in the world of upholstery, it’s important to consider the original design and function of the piece. Trying to recreate something the chair was never meant to be—by building up a sprung seat where a boxed cushion belongs—can compromise its authenticity and functionality.
By honoring the original design, we can preserve the chair’s character while still giving it a beautiful and comfortable update. Boxed cushions also offer flexibility and can be a fantastic way to experiment with contrasting piping to add a splash of personality to a piece.
I’m thrilled to share a special guest video from my incredibly talented colleague Deb Good, where she demonstrates step-by-step how to make a professional boxed cushion cover:
I hope you find the video as helpful as the people who left these lovely comments on YouTube:
“ I found your channel looking for a box cushion tutorial. I’ve looked and tried many many others. My mind just doesn’t work that way! Yours is hands down the one that makes the most sense to me. I made one along watching your video yesterday!! It didn’t turn out quite right but my machine was acting up. I’m going to try again with a different machine. Not to be dramatic but your video is life changing to me. I love doing upholstery but have never been able to get those darn cushions !! I’ve tried so many times. Not to knock my own country (!!) but what really helped was using cm. I’m more familiar than most Americans bc I worked as an ICU therapist for years. Just not something we use here. Sorry for the long reply just wanted you to know how much you helped me. ️” (@PankDotOwner, YouTube)

The video gave me the confidence to make a very large box cushion for our day bed, it turned out fantastic, thank you once again, Doborah you should do more videos like this ”
