How long is a piece of string? It depends on the project and how experienced you are. If you are beginner, it will take longer but on your second, third, fourth project you will do webbing for example so much quicker as you know what to do. It also depends how much time you can give - if you do some every day you will complete it much faster than if you can only give an hour or two once a week or fortnight.
There is no denying traditional upholstery is labour intensive and requires a degree of manual dexterity, but that is what it takes to build quality furniture which will last. I have students who return to my classes after over 20 years and the chair needs a re-cover but the upholstery underneath is in perfectly good condition and will continue to last. Check out my free downloads which can give you an idea of how long some projects may take, how much fabric you may need and more.
Modern and mass produced furniture can be cheap, but it doesn't last. The frames are made with lower calibre wood, the foam crumbles, the staples are hard to remove if you want to upholster again and it isn't built to last. I promote the restoration of antiques built with quality hardwood, sustainable quality materials and the techniques curated by our ancestors. The saying "buy cheap, buy twice" may spring to mind but it is true. If you invest the time in upcycing your pre-loved furniture you will enjoy multiple rewards- not only longevity, but the self-fulfilment and achievement, the bespoke colour schemes and expression of personality in your chosen fabric coordinated to the space.
You don't need one for the actual upholstery as everything will be tacked and hand stitched into place. You will however need one for any single or double piping if you choose that finish. There are places that can make it up for you or you can ask to borrow one. I have full video tutorials showing you how to make both single and double piping
There are a number of basic tools and more specialist tools you will need for your upholstery project(s) which you will need to source. Head to my downloads section for a guide on the tools you need for upholstery.

You can watch the video demonstrations as many times as you like while you are a paying member. The videos cannot be downloaded and are protected by copyright.
Video tutorials are the best way of demonstrating upholstery skills so there aren't many handouts but you will find a couple of relevant ones as a PDF in the associated tutorial.
